The purpose of a start-up is to ensure that the assembled installation corresponds to the designed electrical system.
The start-up of an electrical system is frequently performed by the same company which has installed it. This procedure does not offer the necessary guarantees to protect the owner's interests. To contract an independent organization to perform the start-up is the best protection of the owner´s interests.

A rigorous start-up must consist of the following steps:

- A revision of the project.
- Check up of components.
- Cable testing.
- Functional testing in de-energized state.
- Operational testing in energized state.

The data gathered from these steps is an excellent beginning to assure a breakdown-free functioning, with exception of unusual situations. It is also the best initial step to evaluate future maintenance plannings.
